It's essential to recognize that Unimate yerba mate comes in both lemon and lemon-ginger flavors and like many other products, is in line with common industry practices for natural flavoring of products, and concerns about inflammation should be considered on a case-by-case basis.

'Natural Flavors' in the Feel Great System: Industry Standards and Practices

The term "natural flavors" indeed encompasses a wide range of flavoring agents, and the reviewer's concern is valid. As I noted in Chapter 4 of my book  'Beyond Feel Great,” the label "natural" on food products signifies that the manufacturer used a natural source, such as apples or rice, at some stage in the process. In the context of the Feel Great System, the use of natural flavors aligns with industry standards and practices. 

Sucralose in Unimate: Analyzing the Clinical Research and Understanding the Context in the Feel Great System

Reviewer Statement: "Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that has been shown in clinical research to cause negative changes to insulin function in healthy adults, as we documented in [Nutritional Journal]."

The concern about sucralose, an artificial sweetener, causing negative changes to insulin function is based on a specific study cited in the Nutrition Journal. Sucralose has been vilified in recent months as another newly published study was cited saying it has potential health concerns including damage to DNA and cancer. Obviously, this leaves us with the important question - why would Unicity use sucralose in Unimate? Let’s take a look!

What the studies fail to explain is that they used extremely high concentrations of sucralose. The amounts of sucralose studied in the clinical trial mentioned by the reviewer is (48 mg and 96 mg), which are significantly higher than the 8 mg found in one packet of Unimate. The effects observed in the study were at levels six to twelve times greater than what a typical Unimate consumer would ingest. Consumers are obviously not drinking 6 to 12 packets of Unimate per day. As well, there are other ingredients in a diet soda that need to be taken into consideration; ingredients that not found in Unimate and there are ingredients in Unimate that are not found in diet sodas. 

In another recent study that was recently highlighted in the news used extremely high concentrations of sucralose. That study, published in the Journal Toxicology and Environmental Health, was done in vitro, meaning in a petri dish – not an actual “human study”. in order to create the sucralose toxicity level used in the petri dish study, one would have to drink 8,000 diet sodas in a single day over an extended period of time. Obviously, there’s not a human on the planet drinking that many sodas in one day!

So with that same comparison, one serving of diet soda contains 8 times the sucralose content than a single serving of Unimate. To create the toxicity levels in the study one would have to drink 62,500 sachet servings of Unimate per day over an extended period of time. Obviously, no one is ever going to drink 2,083 boxes of Unimate (30 sachets per box). If 1 box is a month usage, it would take you 174 years to drink 2,083 boxes. It's really important to keep these in vitro studies into perspective!
